The former Hatting Street Dump site was a disaster
waiting to happen. The old landfill site was
highly contaminated with heavy metals of lead, arsenic,
mercury and PCBs and was located on the bank of the Rock
River. The banks were eroding and sending heavy
metal laden soil and sediment downstream causing
concerns as the city of Luverne and Rock County Rural
Water well fields are located downstream. Rock
County partnered with the city of Luverne and landowners
to protect the Rock River banks by sloping and using
riprap along the bank. The landfill site was
leveled with additional top soil, sloped away from the
river and planted with native vegetation.
